Reproductive healthcare has evolved significantly with advancements in modern science, including Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). One such advancement is Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT), which helps identify potential chromosomal anomalies or genetic disorders at the embryo development stage. PGT treatment improves pregnancy outcomes with minimal risks. This article discusses PGT treatment in detail, its benefits, procedure, and cost.

What Is Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing & How Does it Work?

treatment image

PGT is a method that identifies any genetic defects in an embryo created through an in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure. Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is done before the embryo is transferred into the uterus, to ensure a healthy and successful pregnancy. This method significantly reduces the risk of miscarriages and genetic disorders in the babies born through the IVF procedure.

Who Is Eligible For Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing?

  • PGT treatment offers benefits

  • Couples With Genetic Disorders:

  • Couples With A Family History Of Genetic Diseases:

  • Women With Advanced Maternal Age:

  • Couples With A History Of Multiple Miscarriages:

  • Couples Who Experienced Recurrent IVF Failure:

The PGT treatment offers benefits to several couples, especially women of advanced age, hoping for a successful IVF procedure and a healthy pregnancy

Step By Step PGT-A Treatment Process

IVF Process:

Normal In-Vitro Fertilization process is done where eggs will be collected and fertilized with sperm to form embryos. These embryos are grown in controlled lab conditions until three days or five days.

Embryo Biopsy:

Preferably, on day 5 or 6 of embryo development (blastocyst stage), a few cells are carefully removed via a biopsy procedure by an embryologist from the outer layer of the embryo (trophectoderm) without causing any damage to the embryo.

Genetic Testing:

The cells are checked for chromosomal abnormalities or if they are carrying any genes of a hereditary genetic condition.

Embryo Selection:

Based on the results, the genetically normal embryo is transferred into the uterus and the remaining healthy embryos can be frozen for future use.

How Much Does Pre-Implant Genetic Testing Cost In India?

The cost of the Pre-implantation Genetic Testing procedure can range from INR 5000 to INR 27000. The cost of the treatment depends on several factors, such as the doctor’s experience, the clinic’s reputation, the geographical location and the couple’s reproductive health status.

Benefits Of PGT Treatment

The treatment offers the following benefits:

  • Prevents The Risk Of Hereditary Diseases:

If the couple undergoing the IVF procedure has a known history of a hereditary disease, the treatment reduces the risk of passing the hereditary disease to the baby born through the procedure.

  • Improved Pregnancy Outcomes and IVF success rates:

The PGT treatment increases the success rate of pregnancy as it helps identify the healthiest genetically normal embryo to be transferred.

  • Lower Miscarriage Rate:

The PGT treatment can lower the chances of miscarriages in IVF procedures by screening the embryos for genetically normal ones for transfer.

  • Quicker Pregnancy Time:

By helping select only genetically normal embryos for transfer, the procedure drastically reduces the risk of early pregnancy miscarriages and in turn reduces the patients time to a successful pregnancy.

  • Reduced Emotional Burden:

The procedure helps to rule out any chromosomal anomaly or potential genetic disorders in the baby, thereby greatly reducing the emotional burden of the couples undergoing the IVF procedure.
